Why Google Reviews Matter More Than Ever for Small Businesses

Running a small business means living in the real world of feedback.

Some days it’s glowing praise.

Other days it’s criticism.

Sometimes it’s a suggestion that helps you fix something you didn’t even know was broken.

At Local Laundry, we’ve learned that reviews, especially Google reviews and product reviews, are one of the most important tools a small business can have.

Not just for visibility.

Not just for sales.

But for trust, community, and accountability.

Why Reviews Matter So Much for Small Businesses

When someone discovers a brand today, one of the first things they do is search for it online.

And what shows up first?

Reviews.

According to BrightLocal’s 2023 Local Consumer Review Survey, 98% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses, and most people trust them almost as much as personal recommendations.

For a small business, that means reviews aren’t just feedback, they are reputation.

They help people answer simple but important questions:

  • Can I trust this brand?

  • Is the product good quality?

  • Do they treat customers well?

  • If something goes wrong, will they fix it?

For companies like ours, which are built on community and word-of-mouth, those answers matter a lot.

When We Started Asking for Reviews

Local Laundry launched in 2015.

For the first few years, we focused almost entirely on building products and partnerships.

Reviews weren’t something we actively asked for.

That changed around 2018, when we realized something simple:

People were already talking about their experiences with us, we just weren’t inviting that conversation into a place where others could see it.

So we began encouraging customers to leave reviews.

Then around 2022, Connor started doing something even more personal.

After orders shipped, he began sending a short thank-you email with a quick personal video asking customers if they’d be willing to leave a review.

Nothing automated.

Nothing overly polished.

Just a quick message of appreciation and an invitation to share honest feedback.

The response surprised us.

Why People Actually Leave Reviews

Over time we noticed something interesting.

Most customers don’t leave reviews because a brand asks them to.

They leave reviews because they feel something.

Sometimes it’s excitement about a product they love.

Sometimes it’s appreciation for a cause they supported through a campaign.

Sometimes it’s gratitude for good customer service.

And yes, sometimes it’s frustration.

But all of it matters.

The Honest Truth About Bad Reviews

Bad reviews aren’t fun.

No business enjoys reading them.

But they’re part of doing business publicly.

And honestly, they often help the most.

When something goes wrong, we try to respond quickly and fairly.

Sometimes that means:

  • Offering a refund

  • Replacing a product

  • Fixing a process that caused the issue

Without that feedback, we wouldn’t always know where things need improvement.

Reviews are one of the few places where customers can hold businesses accountable in real time.

Why Brands Build Reviews Into Their Systems

If you’ve ever noticed QR codes asking for reviews in stores or emails asking for feedback after a purchase, there’s a reason.

Reviews help businesses:

  • Improve products

  • Understand customer experiences

  • Build credibility

  • Show transparency

They’re so important that many companies integrate them directly into their systems, including email flows.

At Local Laundry, reviews are part of our email flows, just like shipping confirmations and thank-you messages.

Not because we want perfect ratings.

But because we want honest conversations with our customers.

Trust Is Everything

Local Laundry exists because of community.

People find us for many different reasons:

  • Canadian-made clothing

  • Fundraising collaborations

  • Word-of-mouth recommendations

Reviews help new customers understand what kind of brand we are.

They also remind us why we do this work.

When someone takes a few minutes to leave a thoughtful review, it helps future customers make a decision, and it helps us keep improving.

Small Businesses Are Navigating a Changing Economy

Across Canada and around the world, small businesses are facing serious challenges.

Costs are rising.

Competition is global.

Many businesses are closing or reinventing themselves to survive.

Reviews might seem like a small thing, but they help small businesses stay visible, credible, and connected to their communities.

They’re part of how trust is built in the digital age.
