This Girl Can...

This Tuesday on the blog we hear from This Girl Can YYC Expo founders Robyn and her business partner, two mothers of spunky tween daughters. The This Girl Can Expo is for girls ages 5-17 and features health and wellness, sports activities, fashion, arts and design, science and technology and safety and support. In a world where young girls are told what to do and how to look, This Girl Can breaks the stigma and empowers girls to find their ideal self.

This Saturday, September 14, Local Laundry will be joining the Expo at the Big Four Building on Stampede Park from 10 am to 5 pm. Stop by and say hello!

This Girl Can Expo is the first expo of its kind here in Calgary. It will be the second year running and we couldn’t be more excited. Our goal is to create an opportunity for girls to find a connection within our community while gaining confidence within themselves. This one-day event will bring together inspirational speakers, engaging exhibitors and free classes for girls to explore and discover new and exciting opportunities. We want to provide an easy and accessible place for youth and families to come together and feel safe and supported. Calgary has so much to offer and we hope that girls will be able to reach their own unique potential and create what their own story is and will be.

We are two local moms pursuing our passion for supporting young women in our beautiful city. After meeting eleven years ago, six kids later and navigating through the rollercoaster ride of family and work life, we wanted to create a helpful resource for families. By bringing together the many programs, organizations, businesses, speakers and teachers all under one roof, the expo will provide not only a wealth of knowledge but a fun and interactive day to discover and explore new possibilities.  New this year to our expo will be our much anticipated Kids Market. We will be hosting local youth entrepreneurs and giving them the opportunity to sell their products and learn all about being in business. We will have a group of sisters selling handmade, eco-friendly scrunchies to girls in STEAM selling robotics kits to homemade health products. One organization on sight during the event will be Minipreneurs, whose program is catered to teaching local youth important entrepreneurial skills through their amazing programs. We are thrilled to have so many supportive programs, organizations and businesses joining us at the expo.

This community is how we met, what brought us together and what will continue to support us in the future.  At This Girl Can, we have no agenda, no stigmas, no rules for how to be a girl. We are at a pivotal time. Girl empowerment has never been more important.  It is time to join the movement and to show our daughters, granddaughters, sisters, friends, and nieces that they have the potential for their own unique greatness!! Together, THIS GIRL CAN!
