July 2016 Laundry Folding - Accessible Calgary and the R.A.D. Program
An estimated 7% of Calgarians live with limited mobility, yet fewer than 1% of homes in Calgary are accessible. Most individuals with physical disabilities or mobility issues live in inaccessible and unsafe environments, placing them at high risk for physical injury, social isolation, and homelessness.
Did you know that by 2019 nearly 200,000 Calgarians over the age of 15 will be living with a disability and there are only 330 housing units that are both accessible and affordable? That's something we'd like to change.
For the month of July we have decided to give our pledged 10% of total profits to Accessible Housing of Calgary to help those living with disabilities live better and easier. We couldn't think of a better cause that shares the same values of building community and making everyone feel a part of it. We decided to donate specifically to the R.A.D. program.
Residential Accessible Design (RAD) Renovations is a preventative program helping Calgarians with limited mobility live safely in their homes and communities, with their families and support systems.
The RAD Renovations team applies their architectural and barrier-free design expertise to work with clients to:
- assess client and built environment needs
- prepare accessible design drawings & construction specifications
Recognizing the challenges involved in translating accessible design to reality, RAD Renovations also:
- facilitates applications for the Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP) funding
- organizes donations of labour and building materials
- manages construction
- supports homeowners and landlords throughout the renovation process
The RAD Renovations program is free to applicants who qualify for the Government of Alberta’s Residential Access Modification Program (RAMP), which specifies that participants are lower income and wheelchair users. Please see the RAMP program website for complete qualification guidelines. Applicants who do not qualify for RAMP funding may still be eligible to participate in RAD Renovations depending on circumstances and available resources.
RAD Renovations also offers a fee for service option to applicants who do not qualify for RAMP funding due to their higher income levels. In this instance RAD will provide accessible design for a fee which will be used to further support the free service.
